    北天重要的星座，全天面积第三：仅次于长蛇座和室女座。由于北斗七星（从大熊座α到大熊座η，除去大熊座δ是三等星外，另外6颗星均是2等以上的亮星）的存在，大熊座可能是全天最著名的星座了。北斗星的头两个星α和β，对于找到北极星具有指示作用，这两星的连线直接指向北天极。

    勺柄的第二颗星（大熊座ζ）实际上是聚星，通过肉眼我们就可以看到一个4等的伴星Alcor。通过小型望远镜我们还可以看到靠近大熊座ζ的另外一颗星，它也是4等星。而实际上这3颗星又各是一个双星系统，因此，这是一个6星系统。

    另一个有趣的是大熊座ξ，这是一个由两个黄色恒星组成的双星系统，彼此间以60年为周期进行运动。

    该座有两个旋涡星系：8等M81和9等的M101。
